Foxglove Cottage, Opinan, Laide

Foxglove Cottage is perfect for those seeking a restful holiday in beautiful and tranquil surroundings. Secluded and set in a peaceful woodland garden, with access to 10 acres of private woodland it is ideal for those looking for a retreat from the stresses of modern life. The cottage, which is a traditional stone built croft house which has been sympathetically renovated and extended, is situated on a quiet road in Opinan, 4 miles north of the village of Laide, and 1 mile from the golden sands of Mellon Udrigle and is ideal for family holidays and as a centre for walking and climbing. The owners live in the cottage over the road so you can be assured of a warm welcome.

The situation at the head of Greenstone Point, the peninsula between Loch Ewe and Gruinard Bay, affords stunning views of sea and islands, mountains and moorland. To the north are views of the Summer Isles and the mountains of Suilven, Quinag and Stac Polly. To the east is the impressive mountain range of An Teallach. For nature lovers there are seals, otters, occasionally pine-martens and a wide variety of birds of woodland, moorland and coast.

Wester-ross in the North-West Highlands of Scotland is an area of stunning natural beauty and wild-life. Nearby Gruinard Bay with its sandy beaches and river walks is the home of the sea-eagle. Inverewe Garden, 12 miles away, is a National Trust treasure and worth a visit at any time of year. Gairloch, 20 miles away, has good restaurants, museum, pony trekking, fishing trips and sea cruises. At Ullapool, 45 miles away, there are craft shops, including the popular "Highland Stoneware", sea trips round the Summer Isles and the car ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

What a delight this place is, from the comfy beds, log burner & generous supply of logs (understatement), the kitchen equipped with everything we need, and the gorgeous garden…. The cats Polly and Lionel….. that amazing polytunnel & veggie garden – no “hungry gap” here! Thanks Nick & Janet, hope we see you again soon.

The Godfrey clan

A lovely warm welcome from Janet & Nick. Cottage was very nice, especially enjoyed the log burner in the evening! Weather was fairly kind, even managed to sunbathe on the Mellon Udrigle beach.

Saw loads of wildlife – seals, otters, white tailed eagles, deer - roe and red, not to forget all the birds in the garden. Hill lochs fishing was reasonably productive and mackerel fishing off the pier at Gairloch was prolific!

Lovely and peaceful location and we all hope to return next year.

The Bowies.

Lovely comfortable and spacious cottage. Good roads for cycling and lovely beach at Mellon Udrigle (sea wasn’t cold!). Aultbea Hotel recommended for lunch or dinner and Ewe canoe for a fun few hours. Thanks Janet & Nick.

The Shackleton family

Foxglove Cottage is a place of hidden delights! I have so enjoyed following the pathways and discovering Nick’s garden and polytunnel, not to mention the woodland where I hoped I might see pine martens but happened upon red deer instead! And it’s lovely to hear a cuckoo again (not so lovely are the midges!)

The weather has been amazing the whole week. No rain for six days just blue skies and lots of hot sunshine.

The log fires at night have been a real treat – thanks for the endless supply of wood – and for our chats in the garden. And Mellon Udrigle beach, what can I say? It has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world! It’s been a brilliant week!

Margaret and Malc.

It was lovely to return here after 10 years and find the cottage and gardens as we remembered them and the area still beautiful and unspoiled. Callum has loved it here especially playing in the garden with Rocky (the dog).
